Visual and Performing Arts
The Fine Arts program at Nathan Hale-Ray High School empowers students to explore their creativity, develop their artistic talents, and engage in meaningful self-expression through both visual and performing arts. With a wide variety of courses in both Art and Music, the department nurtures students at all levels—whether they are discovering a new passion or refining advanced skills.
Visual Art offerings begin with foundational courses such as Foundations in Drawing and Foundations in Painting, where students develop essential techniques in composition, color theory, and visual storytelling. More specialized courses like Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Mixed Media, and Clay & 3D Design allow students to experiment with both traditional and digital media. Students who demonstrate advanced skill and dedication may pursue AP Art & Design, a rigorous course where they build a personal portfolio for college and professional review.
In the Music program, students can participate in large ensembles such as Band, Beginning Band, Concert Choir, and Select Choir (audition-based), fostering musical literacy, collaboration, and performance excellence. The curriculum also includes music electives that deepen understanding and appreciation of music as a cultural force, such as Understanding the Influence of Music, Music Theory, and UConn Early College Experience (ECE) courses like Sight-Singing & Ear Training and Music Appreciation. These courses offer opportunities for college credit and a deeper exploration of music's role in society.
Both Art and Music students frequently showcase their talents in public performances, exhibitions, concerts, and festivals. These events provide authentic audiences for student work and strengthen community ties. Students also engage in statewide and regional competitions, receiving recognition for their artistic excellence and dedication.
Through a supportive and inclusive learning environment, Fine Arts teachers encourage students to take creative risks, express themselves authentically, and appreciate the arts as essential to personal and cultural identity. The department fosters interdisciplinary connections, with projects that intersect with history, technology, language, and social justice.
Participation in the Fine Arts cultivates not only artistic skill but also discipline, confidence, and emotional intelligence. Whether creating visual works or performing on stage, students in Nathan Hale-Ray’s Fine Arts program discover the power of the arts to communicate, connect, and inspire.
